Sketching and Drawing for Animation - Week 2

AND141 Sketching and Drawing for Animation

2nd Semester

    Week 2

In the second class of the second semester Sketching and Drawing for Animation course AND141, we focused on the topic of Spatial drawings and the use of space in animation. First we did an exercise of tactile observation and drawing based on description alone. Then we watched an animation, practiced creativity with shadows in an exercise, viewed a clip of another animated film and an interview with an animation director, and finished class with environmental drawing practice using either 2 or 3 vanishing points.

The first drawing exercise focused on Tactile Drawing. One student holds an object behind their back, using their hands to feel the mystery object, and describes it to the class while no one can see it. I went first, and my object was a smoking pipe. Two more students described objects that turned out to be a hand-held massager and a teapot.

The first animation we viewed was Kut | Corner by Lucija Mrzljak.

Then we did another drawing exercise, this time focusing on using Independent Shadow. Part 1 of the exercise was to draw something where the shadow of a character or object interacts with the surrounding environment.

Part 2 of the exercise was to draw a character or object with a shadow that is not actually a shadow, but a hole.

Next we watched the cutout and pixilation animation for Balance and Composure’s - Last to Know (Official Music Video) by Dessie Jackson and an interview with Yegane Moghddam, the director of the animated film Our Uniform.

Finally, we finished class with an environmental drawing exercise using either 2 or 3 vanishing points by going out of the classroom and observing local architecture.
