AND142 Animation Characters and Narrative      Week 2     This post is of week 2 of the first-year animation course AND142 Animation Characters and Narrative because I did not attend the first class. I was recommended to attend this course after the first week by my tutor Aspasia Kazeli in order to aid my exploration, research and development for EXD300.     Notes      CHARACTER     Well-developed characters help the audience experience a film's story/world.  Character Roles: Protagonist - main character Antagonist - villain / opposing force Deuteragonist - sidekick Foil - brings protagonist’s qualities into sharper relief Mentor / Confidant - protagonist’s goal flows through them Love Interest - person or item of desire Secondary Characters - like deuteragonist but less important Tertiary Characters - in story, but not necessary to main storyline Narrator - voice-over Stock Characters - function in the background  Ch...

Sketching and Drawing for Animation - Week 2

AND141 Sketching and Drawing for Animation 2nd Semester     Week 2     In the second class of the second semester Sketching and Drawing for Animation course AND141, we focused on the topic of Spatial drawings and the use of space in animation. First we did an exercise of tactile observation and drawing based on description alone. Then we watched an animation, practiced creativity with shadows in an exercise, viewed a clip of another animated film and an interview with an animation director, and finished class with environmental drawing practice using either 2 or 3 vanishing points.     The first drawing exercise focused on Tactile Drawing . One student holds an object behind their back, using their hands to feel the mystery object, and describes it to the class while no one can see it. I went first, and my object was a smoking pipe. Two more students described objects that turned out to be a hand-held massager and a teapot.     The first animation...

Final Project Animation - Week 2: Discussion

Image
EXD300 Discussion   Week 2      In the second class of the second semester Final Project course, we continued reviewing and expanding upon possible Final Project ideas.   Continued Final Project Ideas     In this week's class, each student discussed their written proposal status and final project ideas. My current final project status is focusing on 2D character rigging and analogue cutout animation. The themes I am considering for exploration are: Digital vs. Analogue, Present vs. Past, and Conscious vs. Subconscious  I also plan to further consider the character interaction in the final animated short. I want it to be a crucial moment in the film that captures the viewer's attention and portrays a message or theme beyond its technical aspects.
